Case study: National Geographic DVD Store

A new destination under the National Geographic Store umbrella gives the DVD Store a place to shine and deliver a premier showcase for its most popular products. New e-commerce capabilities like "Tell a Friend", "Add to Wish List" and "More Ideas" provides a streamlined user experience while driving significant revenue gains.

"Having the capabilities of the new online store and the flexibility it offers is a great asset to us" -Kristen Faust, Marketing Manager, Domestic Home Video, for National Geographic Home Entertainment.

The Challenge:

In early-2005, National Geographic Home Entertainment knew that they needed to capitalize on the tremendous success of the blockbuster hit, "March of the Penguins," in time for the holiday season. But because online DVDs and Videos were just one of numerous products in the National Geographic Online Store, getting top billing among all of the brand's high quality offerings would be a tough proposition for casual shoppers on the site.

The Siteworx Approach:

Siteworx leveraged its complete development process for the engagement. Starting with Discovery, to uncover business requirements and key stakeholder and customer needs, then moving on to User Interface and Creative Design to ensure the new site would provide customers a satisfying shopping experience. In addition, Siteworx implemented its proprietary content management platform, Axiom, for the technical underpinnings of the system. With functions to support e-commerce, integration, generation of outbound email marketing campaigns, and creation of real-time traffic reports, National Geographic Home Entertainment received an attractive and interactive site that was easy-to-manage and enhance for future initiatives.

The Result:

Now, National Geographic DVD Store customers can preview videos online, shop by price, subject, suggested gift ideas, and by special promotions. Integration with National Geographic Home Entertainment's fulfillment center, Client Logic, allows secure ordering and tracking of products, newsletter subscriptions, and a host of other automated customer service functions. The online store also offers a DVD burn-on-demand feature so that customers can choose from a larger selection of older National Geographic films on DVD.
